Baseball European Cup 2024: Montpellier Barracuda too strong for Deurne Spartans

In their first match of the European Cup (formerly known as CEB cup and Confederation Cup), reigning Belgian champions Deurne Spartans was no match for the French champion Montpellier Barracudas. The Belgians were kept in check by the French pitching.

Deurne Spartans  1  –  7  Montpellier Barracudas

Eventhough the final result wasn’t a blowout score, Deurne Spartans weren’t a match for the Barracudas. Their lineup was kept in check by Owen Ozanich. For the Deurne Spartans it was Anderson Denny Gerdel Nieto started the game and pitched six innings in which he struck out ten batters but allowed five runs nevertheless.

With one blow, Montpellier took the lead in the first inning when Paolo Brossier cleared the right field fence. For the next two innings, Gerdel Nieto kept Montpellier in check, but the French champion struck hard in the fourth inning.

With the bases loaded and one out, Julien Monks singled to right field to drive in two runs. Luc Polit also singled to right field and drove in Douglas Rodriguez for the third run of the inning.

Gerdel Nieto would allow one more run in the fifth, before he was replaced in the bottom of the seventh inning. The two relief pitchers Deurne Spartans used, both gave up a run.

What could Spartans do against the strong pitching of Montpellier. Not much. Only in the bottom of the eighth inning they got on the board. With two outs, Leonel Reina Viant doubled down the left field line, followed by a single by Edgardo Jose Nieto Castillo, that allowed Reina Viant to score.

Owen Ozanich earned the win. In eight innings, he allowed one run on six hits, walked one, and struck out nine.  Anderson Denny Gerdel Nieto lasted six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits for the loss.
