Baseball European Cup 2024: Valencia Astros Deals Devastating Loss to Deurne Spartans

A tough loss for Deurne Spartans. The lineup of the Valencia Astros was on an absolute tear as it scored nineteen runs on nineteen hits against the Belgian champions.

Valencia Astros 19 – 4 Deurne Spartans

The Astros only needed five (mercy rule) innings to beat the Deurne Spartans. In the first inning, the Spanish runner up, scored four runs and never looked back. The biggest inning for the Spaniards was the third, when they scored nine runs. Fifteen Astros came at bat, facing two different pitchers and collecting six singles, two doubles, and a home run.

It took Spartans until the third inning to get on the board, but Valencia’s lead was too big already to catch them up. Joey Lambert led off the third with a single and advanced to second on a balk. A 4-3 groundout by Leonel Reina Viant moved him over to third base, from where he scored on another groundout, this time hit by Edgardo Jose Nieto Castillo.

In the fourth inning, Deurne scored three more runs. Consecutive singles by Alexis Marques and Steff Roymans, followed by a double down the left field line, hit by Frank Alejandro Prieto Burgos, drove in two. The third run of the inning was driven in on a 5-3 ground out, hit by Joey Lambert.

Clearly the headcoach of the Astros tried to save some arms as he let three pitchers show up. Two of them pitched two innings and the third (Roibert Decena) hurled one for the win. Decena earned the win as he gave up a walk, a hit, and struck out three.
Jose Luis Larrinaga Ocampo took the loss. In two innings and three batters faced, he gave up nine earned runs on eight hits and two walks as he struck out three.

Today, the Deurne Spartans face the Vienna Metrostars, last year’s runner in Austria. Game time: 9:30.
