Baseball Federation Cup 2024: Another Day, Another Win For Hoboken Pioneers

In its third match of the tournament, Hoboken Pioneers was much too strong for the Rättvik Butchers. In seven innings, the Pioneers shoved the Swedish champion aside.

Right in the first inning, Hoboken Pioneers struck hard. Benjamin Goffaux opened the score on an RBI single by Luis Unda,  after he got on base on a single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. After Dennis de Quint drew a walk, Xander Verspreet connected for a home run to give Hoboken a 4-0 lead. 

In the following two frames, Pioneers scored seven runs before Rättvik got on the board. 
Back-to-back-to-back singles by Sam Börjes, Daniel Johnson, and Joel Johnson drove in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. 

In the following inning, Hoboken struck thrice when Wesley Janssens singled with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in Dennis de Quint and Xander Verspreet. Vegas Tiliakos drove in the third run of the inning with a single to right-center field. 

The final score was reached in the sixth inning when Hoboken scored twice and Rättvik once. 

Lucas Rizzi pitched a “complete” game. In seven innings, he allowed three runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out six for the win. Pontus Ununger took the loss. In two innings and two batters faced in the third, he was tabbed for eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits. He walked two and struck out one. 

Best hitter for the Hoboken Pioneers was Xander Verspreet, who went 5 for 5 with eight RBI and two runs scored and with a three run homer. 

Thanks to this win, Hoboken is the only unbeaten team. Today they will play the final game of the round robin against the Irish champions Greystones Mariners. Game time: 13:00.
