Belgian Talent Invited For European Development Tournament

Since baseball is a small sport in Belgium, it does not happen very often that Belgian players are invited for MLB sanctioned tournaments. But this year one youth player managed to do so: Nando Mostaert, the utility player of the Deurne Spartans.

The eighteen-year-old Nando had a very respectable season with the Spartans in 2023.
In thirty-seven games, he managed to hit .365 with a total of forty-six hits, ten doubles, and six home runs.

During last year’s U23 European championship, Nando also managed to hit above .300 at a tough international field. In five games and sixteen at-bats, he hit .313 with five hits, a double, and a home run. In the five games, Belgium played at this tournament, Nando played first base. He didn’t commit any errors. In the game vs the Czech Republic, he pitched two frames in which he allowed one earned run, resulting in a 4.50 ERA.

With Deurne, Nando played middle infield, mainly at shortstop. In thirty-seven regular season games, he committed seven errors, leading to a fielding percentage of .961.

The European Development Tournament will preceed the MLB Series in London. The invitees will attend the New York Mets-Philadelpia Phillies game on Saturday, June 8th.

The invitational letter, sent by MLB, stated the following:
